I am a teacher at an elementary school. I teach a class called Communications in which we perform plays. Sometimes we film the plays and then edit them. We also have a fully digital TV station and a digital editing lab. We are also fortunate to have an FM radio station. This school is in a very low socioeconomic community and we were blessed to receive a magnet grant to purchase this wonderful and exciting equipment. My main problem is that I have difficulties finding plays or textbooks with plays in them for kids grades 3 through 6. The plays I do find are very short,more like reader's theatre, or they are too advanced for these students. Also, because the Communications department is brand new (this school year) we do not have a "budget" set aside for large expenses outside of the equipment that has already been purchased, so it is not possible to get plays from Samuel French. We can't afford to pay the royalties. I was hoping to come across a Web site that could assist me in my search for affordable plays for young students. I teach at-risk male juvenile offenders ranging in ages from 13 to 18. One out of 6 of my students have suffered physical or sexual abuse. I did not have a body of literature to meet my students' needs. To meet their need I wrote "Cover Fire: a Novel, Play and Study Guide" dealing with abuse issues through role playing. (Peach Blossom Pub. 2001, ISBN 0-941367-30-4.) The Flesch-Kincaid grade level for "Cover Fire" is 3.2, and the Flesch-Reading Ease is 88.8. No graphic sexual or violence content is used in this curriculum. This resource utilizes four themes: accepting the reality of abuse; issues of isolation; acceptance of help; and healing as an actual event. "Cover Fire" is a unique resource for use with at-risk male youth.

interest: I am the drama instructor at my school and have been working on plays with my students for the past 4 years. I took on this role voluntarily with no experience because i thought it would be valuable to the children. It has been tremendous! The kids have enjoyed it as well as parents, the community and me.
message: My message to you is actually a question. Because of the high interest in our school plays and my limited experience, I am finding it hard to deal with up to 80 (that's right, 80) kids and find them all a part. I will not turn kids away who want to be part of the program, so where do I get plays that can accommodate this. I cannot divide the group or do separate plays. The schedule will not allow for that. I am a little frustrated by the lack of existing plays that can accommodate numerous kids. A friend of mine who is a very talented artist runs a summer program for children. It's called the Akwesasne Artistic Enrichment Program. In this program she's teaching the kids about all different forms of art (painting, drawing, pottery, and writing). I'm helping the children write their ownplays and to perform them for an audiance. We live on a reservation in upstate NY and we have a large number of talented youth who live here. We are funded by grants.

We are looking for information to help our students learn how to write and perform. Also we are looking for information on organizations that offer grants to help Native Americans with all forms of art, as we are hoping in the future to open an aristic enrichment school for Native American children who wish for help to attend good art schools in the country and outside. For over 16 years (1969-85), I was the founding producer/artistic director of an all-child repertory theater company (First ACT) in NYC. We commissioned original musical plays which were performed by children, and these productions rotated in repertory (live and occasionally on television) in our NYC theater, nationally and then internationally. I have since moved on, but the plays (some published) are wonderful and waiting to be rediscovered by another generation of children, parents and teachers.
