PROFILE

Margaret Larlham is a Professor of Theatre and resident playwright for the Youth Theatre Touring Program at San Diego State University. She devises performances and plays that cross language, cultural, and artistic boundaries. Her plays have been performed regionally and nationally as well as in Tijuana and at festivals, namely the Theatre of the World Festival in San Diego, and (in 2001 and 2002) at the National Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown, South Africa. Awards include the Bonderman Play Development Award (for TORTILLA MOON), ASSITEJ Observership Award, SDSU Research and Creative Activity Award.

Of TORTILLA MOON, Mark Lynch of Florida Stage wrote:

"This is an extraordinarily exciting script . . . it provides the opportunity of staging of a ravishing visual nature. All the elements of design, sound, and movement come together to create a breathtaking experience in the theatre."

Charlene Dibelka, Drama Chair, Montgomery High School notes:

"I have produced plays for young audiences for 16 years. Finding new and relevant, as well as stimulating material for children is a challenge! TORTILLA MOON was beloved by my students who performed the play and by the children who saw it. We all loved the bilingual touch, the audience participation, and particularly, the adorable character, Underdog. BEYOND BORDERS touched our students as it reached into the heart of the divisions people create in everyday culture. The play was done, however, with sensitivity and humor. UNDERGROUND JUNGLE was a fun fantasy adventure that opened students' eyes to the destruction of the environment. Thanks to Margaret Larlham, the children's theatre community still is getting vibrant, useable plays that are easy to tour."

Margaret currently has two plays in development: CARZ, a play about the impact that cars have had on American culture-- and particularly on the role of women--in the last one hundred years, and FIRE AND MIST, stories of Old Town, San Diego.
